Northern Nevada children are learning about where their water comes from thanks to a cooperation between three nonprofits.

Monday, at the Nature Conservancy's McCarran Ranch Preserve, fifth graders from Kate Smith Elementary got to identify different types of aquatic wildlife as part of their studies on water quality.

Organizers say hands on activities are really key to the learning experience. "It's important because one - to truly engage kids they actually have to be able to experience and secondly when kids get to experience being outside being outdoors, it builds a connection that hopefully will follow them for the rest of their lives," says Sean Hill.

Sierra Nevada Journeys, the Nature Conservancy and the Discovery Museum teamed up to create the three-part "Hands in the Truckee" program.
