Fiery Charges: Romney, Santorum Assail Each Other

Posted: Updated:

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- The latest Republican presidential debate has revealed the more combative sides of Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

The two traded verbal punches about health care, spending earmarks and federal bailouts.

All four GOP candidates, including Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, attacked President Barack Obama for his handling of Iran and its attempt to develop a nuclear program.

Santorum, who has surged in the polls, got booed when he talked about voting for the No Child Left Behind law even though he opposed it.

The candidates were also asked to describe themselves in one word. Ron Paul said he's "consistent." Santorum described himself as "courageous." Romney said he's "resolute." Gingrich chose "cheerful," prompting a bit of laughter in the hall.

Next up on the Republican primary calendar are Arizona and Michigan on Tuesday.
