University Enrollment Helping Keep Nearby Apartments Full

Record enrollment for the University of Nevada, Reno is helping keep the realty business near campus strong.

We've already seen the full dormitories on campus because of the University's record enrollment. Now, all the students on campus are filling the adjacent housing too.

In fact, the numbers we have show that occupancy rates for a lot of the apartment complexes near campus are at 99%. It's no surprise -- location is the big seller.

So, I asked "do you ever have a problem renting?" "No, not really because of our location," Patrick Rozwod of Westwood Sierra Apartments explained. "Kids can walk to school or ride their bikes. We never have many vacancies because of the location."

Rozwod has worked at Westwood Sierra for seven years and says rates have been very steady. He has a few vacancies now because of new graduates, but expects those to fill up fast.

Because occupancy rates are constant so close to the University, some realtors tell me it's now pushing some students out a little farther from campus. That means filling up more apartment complexes a few miles away.

"Right after the dorms, there was no place to go. Everything around here was full, this was the only thing available. So yeah, everything was full," University of Nevada student Justine Mortenson told us of her renting experience.

The complex Mortenson found is a townhouse just a few miles away. All three in that area report constant occupancies of about 99%.
