Reno-based non-profit Think Kindness challenged UNR students to help provide a 1,000 years of clean drinking water to people in Kenya.

Today the global health class at the University of Nevada got to try out the "life straw."

The $5 Swiss device can turn dirty water from Manzanita Lake into clean drinking water in seconds.

The professor says distributing such devices could greatly help in Africa where half the people in hospitals are there due to unclean drinking water.

"The mortality of children under the age of five is immense due to diarrheal diseases and other water born diseases so each straw will provide enough water for one person for an entire year," says Professor Gerold Dermid.

The students are working in groups and competing to raise enough money by the semester's end to buy a 1,000 straws or a home water filtration system which costs $25.

They will be sent to Kenya in April.
