3.5 Magnitude Quake Near Wells

Posted: Updated:

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A shallow earthquake rattled nearly unnoticed near a rural northeastern Nevada town that was badly damaged in a larger quake almost four years ago.

Elko County Sheriff's Detective Lenwood Van Natter says emergency officials received no calls about the earthquake that struck at 6:40 a.m. Wednesday in a remote ranching valley about 14 miles southwest of Wells and 38 miles east of Elko.

No damage or injuries are reported. The earthquake was originally reported as 4.3 in magnitude but later downgraded.

Wells was struck Feb. 21, 2008, by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that officials say caused nearly $10 million in damage.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno later called the Wells quake the biggest in Nevada in four decades and the only one that large in northeastern Nevada in 120 years.
