Reno Police say habitual criminal Dale Vogelaar was sentenced Friday to serve a five to 20 year prison term.

Police say Vogelaar has had seven prior felony convictions and was on parole when he violated the terms of his release last July.

Detectives assigned to the Repeat Offender Program found Vogelaar in a vehicle in the Sun Valley area and tried to take him into custody with the help of Washoe County Sheriff's Deputies.

Police say Vogelaar sped away from the traffic stop and led law enforcement on a high speed chase on US 395 into California.

He was stopped by the California Highway Patrol south of Susanville after officers deployed spike strips and disabled his vehicle to end the pursuit.

Police say Vogelaar then got out of his vehicle and began to stab himself several times before CHP officers were able to disarm him and take him into custody.
