Trial Date for Ensign Aide Still Months Away

Posted: Updated:

A trial isn't expected until late 2012 for the aide to former Sen. John Ensign who was indicted on charges of violating federal conflict of interest laws, because his lawyer needs more time to review the government's evidence.

Doug Hampton's attorney, A.J. Kramer, told a federal judge in Washington on Friday that the review of evidence would probably take until early-to-mid May due to the complexity of the case and the amount of information involved.

Kramer also told the judge that a trial date of about Oct. 1 would be amenable to both sides.

However, U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell set a date of Sept. 5 to review the status of the case. She says the hearing will give her a better idea of an appropriate trial date. (AP)
