For Ann and Chris Potts, retirement is getting up with the sun and preparing for the hustle and bustle of the day. That's because they bought Emerald City. A coffee shop/cafe on the corner of Plumb and McCarran.
Wendy asks, "Why in the world would you buy a restaurant in this economy?"
"It seemed like the right thing to do at the time."
That time was August of 2011. And since then, they've made a few changes. One of the biggest is trying to buy all local like the gluten free pastries from haven on earth in south Reno and locally made jams
They even changed the coffee to use a local roaster. Can't get much fresher than that.
And they've even added their own family soup recipes like crab bisque. But all popular dishes that made Emerald City so popular are still on the menu including scones and lemon curd. And new things are always being added - because they're always listening to their customers. "Low carb syrup for our diabetic customers. Somebody wanted orange marmalade so we've got orange marmalade."
When deciding to spend their nest egg on a restaurant, the Potts came up with four goals:
- have fun
- make some money
- give back to the community
- make it a family legacy.
While the restaurant business may be new to them, they know about longevity and sticking together.
"It was just a dream to be able to do something together," says Ann.
"How long have you been married?"
"We're working on our 47th year."
