The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal pedestrian accident in the South Lake Tahoe area early Sunday morning.

Troopers say it happened around 12:45 a.m. on U.S. Highway 50, just east of Lake Village Drive.

Investigators say a 21-year old Walnut Creek, California man was walking in the left eastbound travel lane, wearing denim jeans and a black jacket. Then, traveling east in the same lane coming toward the pedestrian was a 2011 Ford Expedition California Highway Patrol vehicle driven by Officer Joshua Varanini of Truckee.

Troopers say evidence at the scene shows Officer Varanini hit the brakes of his SUV and steered the vehicle to the right to avoid hitting the pedestrian. The left side of the patrol vehicle hit the man who was sent into a westbound lane.

Then, a white 1998 Ford E-450 two-axle passenger shuttle bus going westbound, driven by 38-year old James Eastland of Sparks could not avoid hitting the pedestrian and ran him over.

Troopers say there were no passengers riding on the bus and the drivers of both vehicles were not injured.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and the troopers say the accident forced the closure of the highway for almost four hours. Eastbound traffic was rerouted out of the area via State Route 207, Kingsbury Grade, while westbound traffic was turned around, near the scene.

If you have any information on this incident, you're being asked to call Trooper Eric Gallagher at 689-4661 for case number: NHP 120100102.
