Presentation Offers Help to Residents Affected by Caughlin Fire

Posted: Updated:

From the City of Reno:

Residents affected by the Caughlin Fire are invited to a special informational session on December 7 to learn how to help their landscapes recover from the 2,000-acre blaze. The presentation will run from 6-8 p.m. at Caughlin Ranch Elementary School at 4881 Village Green Parkway and will include an update on restoration efforts.

At 6:00 p.m., Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space Planning Manager Lynda Nelson will join Kyle West , Safety Program Manager from the City of Reno, to provide an update on plans to rehabilitate other areas burned by the fire. The County and City of Reno have established a Burned Area Emergency Response team that is studying how to control erosion, reseed burned hillsides and manage public access to the affected area.

The event also features a presentation by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Educator JoAnne Skelly about after-fire care of trees and plants and how to tell what might live and what is probably dead. Skelly worked extensively with property owners affected by the Waterfall Fire and will share what she learned from that experience. Ed Smith, a UNCE natural resource specialist, will also discuss what grows back after the fire.

A representative of the Nevada Land Conservancy will also be on hand to discuss acquiring permission to access private land in the burned area.

The sessions are free and open to the public. Persons with disabilities who may need special accommodations should contact Ashley Andrews at 775-336-0231 or andrewsa@unce.unr.edu in advance of the event.
