Sadly, it's something we see often in tough times like these -- scams.

"Those people who do choose to scam victims and further victimize them will use pressure tactics, meaning they want a decision right now and they want money right now, and by giving a person money up front it's something that you can't track and a lot of times those people are gone before we even hear, or its reported so be very careful," says Washoe County Deputy Armando Avina.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office says its best for victims to work with their insurance providers to begin the re-building process.

To make sure you're using the right people call the Builders Association of Northern Nevada at 329-4611.

Or the State Contractors Board at 688-1141 to learn more about local builders and contractors.
