From the outside, you might think your options are limited at Quarter Mile Corn Dog. But one step inside shows this isn't just your ordinary corn dog stand. And Irv and Nancy Wise aren't your ordinary restaurant owners. "We drag race and we like to cook. So Quarter Mile Corn Dog encompasses both," says Irv.
Their menu is split into two. On the left side are all of your hot dog options. Many are named for race cars such as the Wise hot dog. It's named for Irv and Nancy's car. On the other side of the menu are your corn dog options. Like the Hewes. It too is named after a race car. They also have tri tip cheesesteak sandwiches, linguica, even garlic fries. But why corn dogs? Irv says it came about from pure observation. "It's kind of funny story. We always go to the fair and see the long lines at corn dogs stands and we thought this is a pretty popular item so let's do it ourselves."
They started selling corn dogs out of a trailer at local special events. The idea for a restaurant came from their customers. "Our customers pushed and prodded us and said why don't you open a restaurant?"
A year and a half ago, the economy struck the Wise household. Irv was in the failing construction business and the company Nancy worked for went out of business. They figured the time was right to give Quarter Mile Corn Dog a shot. They cook all of their hot dogs on the grill with a butter sauce. No steaming here. They say it's the perfect base for their chili cheese dog. And their Mountain Motor fries come topped with tri tip, peppers, onions, cheese and barbecue sauce. And the fryer doesn't stop there. They use it for dessert as well. "We do the famous deep fried Snickers bar and then also peaches and apples as well."
Quarter Mile Corn Dog is located at 2900 Clear Acre Lane, on the north east corner of McCarran and Clear Acre. For more information call 775-786-7623 or go online to www.qmcdreno.com
