Community Split Over Future of IHOP Rampage Site

Posted: Updated:

A month after a mentally unstable gunman went on a deadly rampage at a Carson City IHOP, residents are split over what to do with the restaurant.

The Nevada Appeal of Carson City reports that while some want the restaurant to reopen at the same site, others want it moved elsewhere in town or razed.

"I think they should tear it down. I think it makes it sort of creepy," says Kay Atchison of Carson City.

Jim Booker of Minden adds, "I'd like to see it stay open where it is."

"I think IHOP should have a different location," says Sheila Walther of Carson City.

Judy Budjeko of Carson Valley says, "I think they should stay right where they are. It's very convenient."

Eduardo Sencion fired 60 rounds from an assault rifle at the IHOP on Sept. 6, killing four people and injuring seven others before killing himself.

Sandy Hawkins of Carson City says, "They should just tear it down and build another building instead of making a memorial out of it. Cemeteries are where things should be, you know."

Kevin Carrick, who was in the restaurant at the time of the shooting, says it would be a sign of disrespect if IHOP reopened at the same site.

IHOP spokeswoman Rhonda Barnat declines to say whether any decision has been made on the fate of the closed restaurant.

Booker says, "My first thought is compassion goes out to the owners of the business. You know what they must be going through with the stigma that's attached to that tragedy."
