Postgame Notes
CANNON STAYS HOME: Nevada extended its series]record win streak to seven straight games over the Rebels. UNLV has not won a game in the series since 2004. The Wolf Pack now owns a 22]15 advantage in the series, having won seven straight since UNLV evened the series at 15 with their win in 2004.
FIRST SHUTOUT: The shutout marked the first]ever shutout in the 37]game history of the rivalry between the two teams. It also marked Nevada's first shutout overall since 2006 when the Pack blanked Louisiana Tech, 42]0.
ROY EXTENDS STREAK: Nevada senior defensive tackle entered the game ranked second and third nationally in tackles for loss and sacks, respectively. He recorded stats in both categories on Saturday with a monster game against UNLV. Roy led Nevada with 11 tackles, including one sack and four tackles for a loss. Roy entered the game with a streak of five straight games with a sack dating back to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. He extended that to six games with a sack in the first half.
LOUKS SCORES: Corbin Louks scored the first touchdown of his Nevada career with a 34]yard catch in the first half. The senior wideout played safety last season as a junior. The touchdown was not the first in his career, however, it just marked the first score since Oct. 18, 2008, when Louks played quarterback for Utah and scored two running TDs against Colorado State.
QUARTERBACKS: Cody Fajardo is 1]0 as a starting quarterback after getting the first start of his career on Saturday. But Tyler Lantrip was the show in the Pistol offense against UNLV. The senior came off the bench to throw for 366 yards and three touchdowns – both career highs – on 18]of]29 passing.
FREY GETS PICK: Nevada's active leader in career pass breakups got his first interception of the season in the first half. Frey picked off Caleb Herring in the end zone to thwart a UNLV scoring attempt.
MATTHEWS EXTENDS STREAK; TOPS 100: Rishard Matthews had a career game for the Pack, catching 10 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown. That included a career]long 90]yard catch]and]run on a pass from Tyler Lantrip. This marks the fifth time in his career and third time this season that Matthews eclipsed the 100]yard mark in receiving. He also extended his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 19 – all 19 games of his career. The 220 yards marks the first time a Nevada player had more than 200 yards since Nate Burleson had 215 against BYU in 2002. It was the most overall since Burleson had 326 against San Jose State in 2001.
EXTRA POINTS: UNLV won the toss and deferred to the second half … Nevada defended the North and received the opening kickoff … Chris Barker started his 32nd consecutive game – all 32 games of his career … Nevada is now 15]5 in home openers in its FBS history and head coach Chris Ault is 6]2 in home openers since he returned to the sidelines in 2004 … The 90]yard pass play between Lantrip and Matthews was Nevada's longest since a 90]yarder between Nick Graziano and Mike McCoy in 2007, also against UNLV … The two sacks by Jack Reynoso were the first of his career.
NEXT UP: Nevada will remain at home for game two of its three]game homestand to play host to New Mexico. This will be Nevada's first game against its future Mountain West foe since the 2007 New Mexico Bowl. It will be Nevada's final non]conference game of the year. The game will not be televised.
With the win, Nevada saw its record improve to 2]3 on the year. The win moved Nevada's all]time record to 505]438]33 and Hall of Fame Coach Chris Ault saw his record move to 221]100]1.
