Local Bank Sees Rash of Counterfeit $100 Bills

At least one local bank is seeing a rash of counterfeit $100 bills.

Heritage Bank says the bills all came in this week - from local businesses of all sizes.

The Secret Service says counterfeits are common in Reno but to see so many at one local bank in one week is unusual. "We've had six just this week which is a lot of a bank of this size....all $100 bills and all with the same serial number ending with 7118A," says Steve Carrick, head of operations at Heritage Bank.

The new $100 bill is equipped with several security features to help deter counterfeiting -

  • watermark portrait of Benjamin Franklin
  • vertical security thread imprinted with 100 and USA
  • 100 in the lower right of the bill that changes color from green to gold.
