Plans to put Americans back to work are being discussed in Washington, D.C. right now. But which plan would benefit Nevada more?
If fact it's hard to miss them as they seem to be the main message on every campaign stop President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner have made in the past few weeks.
According to former financial advisor to Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, Brad Schiller, the Boehner plan holds more hope for creating jobs.
"Boehner's proposal does address some of the reason why we can't get lending done in this economy," Schiller said from his office at UNR. "Obama's plan is basically just another stimulus plan and it won't work. The plan certainly didn't. It promised to create millions of jobs and we lost jobs with it! It's just the wrong strategy from the get go."
According to business experts, much of he money from the last stimulus package went to saving some jobs but not creating new ones in Nevada. The jobs that were created were construction jobs and they were all short-lived.
"Those types of jobs are temporary. You want to develop industries that last longer than three months...six months or even a year," says Reno City Manager and former State Budget Director Andrew Clinger.
Trey Abney with the Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce agrees.
"So a construction job is great," he says. "It puts money in pockets and that helps my members. But what do you do when that job runs out? We need a strategy to move on to," he says.
"The public is always attracted to big visible things...bridges highways big projects," Schiller says. "It looks like the government is doing something positive. Rescinding regulations on business is not visible but it works in quiet and effective ways which get people to hire more."
And local businesses want to hire more. They just need stability to do it. And that comes by knowing what to expect with taxes and regulations.
The final bill will likely be a compromise between the two plans. And while everyone's bracing for a stalemate through the election...they are all hoping to see some action...sooner rather than later.
