A Kansas family who lost a mother in the Air Races tragedy is focusing on 4 other members who suffered life-threatening injuries.
Allen Elvin, as spokesman for the family, addressed the press today at Renown Regional Medical Center and said he knows that Cherie Elvin, who died in that crash would have wanted the races to continue.
"She loved these races," Allen Elvin said. "For our entire family it was like a family reunion every year. We came from all over the country to watch them and to get together. I know she loved being here and would want them to continue."
The family also said they have been stunned by the amazing outpouring of help from the community - from medical staff to complete strangers who have offered prayers and good thoughts, transportation and even places for family members to stay.
The four recovering family members are all in difference stages of healing. One member appeared at the press conference using a walker instead of a wheelchair. The others are all still bed-bound.
But the family believes they are the signs of hope in tragedy and have every confidence they'll be able to go home as a family as well.
