Fire officials are investigating a fire that burned down a historic landmark late Saturday night.
Firefighters say they responded to a brushfire around 11:30 p.m. near 241 Virginia Street in the Wadsworth area.
While crews were fighting the brushfire, they say they saw smoke coming from the old schoolhouse. Firefighters immediately began removing the boards that covered up the windows to the abandoned landmark.
Officials say once the boards were removed, heavy smoke and intense heat billowed from the schoolhouse that was followed by an immediate burst of flames.
Firefighters battled the blaze for a few hours, and were able to prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.
Investigators say the old schoolhouse was totally lost. They suspect the fire may have started in the schoolhouse and spread to the surrounding grass and brush.
No one was hurt.
