A shooter walked into the IHOP on South Carson Street and shot and killed four, and injured seven others, before turning the gun on himself Tuesday. Four of those victims remain hospitalized at Renown Medical Center Wednesday.
Chris Demers is a neurosurgeon who helped one of those victims. The condition has not been released at this time. He tells Channel 2 News if left unattended, the victim would not have survived another hour.
"We made the decision to take the patient up to the operating room to decompress a very, very large blood clot," Demers said.
After an initial evaluation, the victim was taken into trauma surgery, where a large part of the victim's skull was taken off, so the brain could expand and swell.
Surgeons say events like these involving bullet wounds means every situation is different, and being well-trained, well-prepared and well orchestrated is key to saving as many lives as possible.
"That's particularly important when dealing with mass casualties and mass traumas, like the one yesterday," Demers said.
