School District Police say you can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of people's children, but they admit they seem to see more incidents this time of year. "At the beginning of school, why we see a little bit more is everybody has a more heightened alert," school police Chief Mike Mieras explains. "The other agencies are out helping us, they're doing school zones. They have more people out and there are more parents out and about."

Tuesday there was an incident at Huffaker Elementary School, when a nearby resident saw a bobcat in the area. Something school district police say they've seen before, but more often up in Incline Village with bears.

The other incident happened Monday at Rita Cannan Elementary School, after Reno Police had reports of gunshots in the neighborhood.

Fortunately, nothing happened with either of these incidents, but officials say it's better to err on the side of caution. They also say it's important for parents to be proactive. If you see or hear something near a school, alert law enforcement immediately.
