It's been a hot summer, but the heat has not stopped a local Marine from spending all day, every day, standing outside Sportsman's Warehouse selling raffle tickets to help out his fellow disabled veterans. Frank Greenwood is the Commander of the Reno Chapter One Disabled American Veterans organization.
The organization is raffling off a quad at its annual barbecue fundraiser this weekend.
Greenwood is also a Vietnam veteran.
The disabled vet now deals with symptoms of Agent Orange and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Greenwood says years ago someone helped him recover from war by filing a claim for benefits and now he volunteers his time to pay it forward. "I get up every morning to go help a vet. There's a vet out there somewhere that needs help. So, my rising each morning is to go assist a veteran somewhere."
The money he raises with the quad raffle will help send four paraplegic veterans to the Winter Games. The D.A.V. also plans to buy a new van to transport veterans in Fallon to and from the VA Hospital in Reno.
Plus, Greenwood's chapter feeds the homeless and provides barbecues to veterans throughout the year. "Our motto is veterans helping veterans. We help one another, whatever it may be, whatever the cost - we're there for each other."
You can still purchase $10 raffle tickets at Sportsman's between now and August 20th. It will also get you and your family a barbecue lunch at Sportsman's starting at 1pm Saturday. At 3pm sharp, Greenwood will announce the winner of the quad!
