KTVN Channel 2 - Reno Tahoe News Weather, Video - Someone 2 Know: Guerrilla Kitchen

Once a week, with a cooler in tow, Kyle Young and his friends make their way towards downtown Reno. They often find people hanging out near the river, who are often homeless or do not have a lot of money for food. 

As soon as Kyle walks up and opens his cooler, crowds gather around him. "All right, so here's the deal", Kyle explains, "If you take food, you have to share food with someone in the future. Can you all do that?" With that, Kyle took a knee and started making sandwiches for complete strangers. He calls his community outreach organization Guerrilla Kitchen. "I was thinking "guerrilla" meaning unconventional tactics and "kitchen" - a mobile kitchen."

His vision is not only to fight hunger, but food waste. All the food he gives away comes from his fridge, or his neighbor's, or strangers. Kyle will literally drive to someone's home to pick up their leftovers. "Really anything that anyone would consider eating themself - I consider fair game for distribution." 

He usually feeds anywhere from 10 to 30 people per trip and they don't just approach the homeless. He tries to promote good will with everyone. Sometimes it catches people off guard, but his efforts are usually well-received and he says the hungry are always thankful to receive food from him. "I think it's a very nice gesture what they're doing. It takes a lot of work to actually do something like that for other people; to go out of your way to help people less fortunate," says Mike Garcia, who has some homeless friends. 

Kyle admits it is a time consuming effort, but he hopes eventually everyone he meets and feeds will pay it forward. "I hope people feel more open to sharing and meeting strangers and finding out peoples' stories and just promoting good will."
