At first glance, it looks just like a taco truck you see cruising through construction sites here in town. And in fact, that's what it used to be. Owners Jessie Watnes and Haley Wood explain. "It used to be a taco truck in California. And then we spent four months making it our vision."
Their vision of the GourMelt Grilled Cheese Truck is like something never seen before here in northern Nevada. These two long time friends loved the idea of a female owned business. They love the 1950's look. And so they created this brand that somehow didn't fit a brick and mortar building, but fit perfectly on four wheels. "People ask us to come to their location usually. Business complexes, office buildings, places like that," says Wood.
On this day, they are parked outside Sportiff USA. Almost every Sportiff employee bought a sandwich. Plus, they have their loyal followers who drive across town to find them. So all in all, about 80 sandwiches were served up. That's a pretty good day. Although they've done 120 before and all between 11am-2pm.
These aren't your typical American cheese on white bread sandwiches many people remember. These are gourmet. Like the Bumble Brie which is brie cheese, sliced green apples and ham with a sprinkle of honey. It comes toasted on cinnamon apple bread.
The most popular is the Ultimelt - cheddar, fontina and cream cheese on sourdough with a garlic parmesan crust. And you also have a choice of sides like the garlic parmesan fries, sweet potato fries, or the fresh tomato soup they make daily.
Their menu lists 14 sandwiches, many of which come with meat so don't think you're just getting cheese on bread. You can pretty much get any sandwich you want grilled up to gooey goodness. "I think they look for uniqueness in our sandwiches. They like the different creations that we make. Of course lots of cheese melted deliciously."
