RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 27-year-old Nevada man who robbed a gas station in Stead just 12 days after he'd been released from prison is headed back behind bars for up to 26 years. A Washoe County judge sentenced Brian Porter yesterday to up to 20 years in prison for armed robbery on Jan. 23. He'll serve that after a six year sentence he received last week on a burglary charge stemming from the theft of numerous firearms.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada lawmakers have approved funds for a new phase in the state's 25-year fight to stop the federal government from burying the nation's nuclear waste 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. A legislative committee allocated almost $1.4 million to kick-start legal and technical work ahead of expected Nuclear Regulatory Commission hearings on the proposed Yucca Mountain repository.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Former Washoe County School Police Chief Mike Mieras says in a lawsuit he was fired in retaliation for reporting improper activities by Superintendent Pedro Martinez and others. Mieras told the Reno Gazette-Journal he won't discuss the specific improprieties. Martinez also is suing the district over his own firing in July and subsequent reinstatement.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - The number of employers in Nevada grew 4.1 percent in the past three months compared to the same period a year ago and has nearly returned to the peak of more than 60,000 employers in 2008. State officials say it's the best quarterly growth since the end of 2007 and continues a three-year trend upward since the recession and another indication the state's economy is on the mend.
