If you love hiking and the outdoors, get ready for a new trailhead that's just opened in west Reno.

The Michael D. Thompson trailhead at Hunter Creek is now open at the end of Woodchuck Circle in southwest Reno.

The trailhead was five years in the making and is the brainchild of David Thompson and former County Commissioner Jim Galloway.

Thompson, who donated the land in tribute to his son Michael says the trailhead will offer hikers a plethora of options. "If they want to take a right and go down and walk on the rural side of the Steamboat ditch, or they can walk up Hunter Creek and go all the way to the rim trail if they so chose. There's a waterfall up about a mile and a half and they're in the trees right away."

The trailhead also includes picnic tables, parking and restrooms.
