STEMI/ Door-to-Balloon Time

STEMI (ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction): This shortens door-to-balloon time. Once a patient is picked up by REMSA and is shown to have an abnormal EKG (electrocardiogram) they alert Saint Mary's ED. When the patient arrives, the cath lab (catheterization laboratory) has already been notified, and if balloon placement is necessary, door-to-balloon time is shortened by 10-15 minutes (In October, Saint Mary's average door-to-balloon time was just above 66 minutes). The national benchmark time set by the American College of Cardiologists and the American Heart Association is 90 minutes.
