Reality Check: Barack Obama Ad: Try This

Taxes have dominated the debate on the campaign trail lately. And Barack Obama's answer to the charge he's going to raise taxes is to lead voters to a tax calculator.

But we think there's a better source to compare their tax policies.

AD: Not sure who to believe on taxes?" Try this. Enter your income, marital status, number of kids. Then click. A nurse earning $60,000? You get a $1,000 under Obama. Under McCain...just $150"

That's a half truth. The tax calculator they're directing you to is part of Barack Obama's website... so you can imagine the true part is the estimate of the change in tax liability under Obama.

Saying the change under McCain would be $150 is wrong.

According to an analysis by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center... without any mortgage-based deduction, someone making $60,000 would see their tax liability decrease by between $361 and $869 under McCain.

By far the best way to determine how both candidates' tax policies would affect you, is to visit taxpolicycenter dot org. You use your income, and the number of dependents you have to compare whose tax policy would be better for you.

AD: "The independent Tax Policy Center says Obama offers middle class tax cuts three times as big as McCain's.

That's true. It's based on an analysis of a family earning $66,000 a year. They estimate Obama's tax plan would reduce tax liability by $1,042 a year and McCain's plan would reduce liability by $319 a year.

AD: Even leading conservatives say Obama's plan is better for the middle class.

That's spin. An analyst for the Heritage Foundation didn't say it's better... he did praise the plan to the New York Sun calling it a "great step in the right direction."

Not quite a ringing endorsement.
