Reno-Stead Airport Turned into Firefighting Air Base

Posted: Updated:

More than 21 firefighting aircraft, smoke-jumpers and ground crews have turned the Reno-Stead Airport into an air base for battling wildfires.

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority says with numerous wildfires raging in the region, "the Stead Airport has become a key base in the fight to battle the blazes."

It says that the control tower has been activated to handle the nearly two dozen aircraft being used to fight the fires.  That tower is normally only activated during the National Championship Air Races.

The airport authority says, "Aircraft are taking off and landing at a rapid rate to take on fire retardant and complete air drops on the fires."
