Life in prison for NV man who killed US veteran

Associated Press - July 24, 2010 5:35 PM ET

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A judge has ordered life in prison without parole for a 27-year-old Nevada man convicted of killing a decorated Vietnam War veteran and stealing his Purple Heart.

Prosecutors had tentatively agreed to a deal that would have made Joshua Carl Myers eligible for parole after 20 years.

But Washoe District Judge Janet Berry overruled that on Friday, citing the brutal nature of the brutal murder 61-year-old George "Skip" Eden in November 2008.

Eden served in the U.S. Marines became disabled when he returned home and his childhood Polio resurfaced.

Police say Myers had known Eden about two years but was in a meth-induced frenzy when he slashed his throat, stabbed him multiple times and smashed his head with a mallet.
