Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows (SITM) wants to make a difference in the lives of women. They're helping local women hone their skills to find a job.
It's help many women are looking for to land a job in this tough economy. "I've been unemployed since 2009," says Patricia Carroll of Reno. Carroll worked for a company that laid off 6,500 people. "At first, kinda depressing, sitting at home looking for jobs," Carroll says.
On Saturday, Carroll learned more about honing her job skills to land an administrative position. "I've had an informational mock interview, which was great," Carroll says.
She isn't alone; about 75 other women also honed their skills with workshops on resume writing, filling out job applications, and even credit repair. There was also a clothes closet to show women the appropriate attire for a job interview.
It's an event that SITM and Job Opportunities in Nevada call "Making a Difference for
Women."
"In this economy it's unbelievable what's going on," Dorothy Nash-Holmes with SITM says.
Nash-Holmes says in previous years about a third of the women who attend were looking for a fresh start. They're either out of jail, living in shelters or in some domestic violence situation. But, it's a different story this year. "This year it's more like 50/50 because of the economy is just so bad. Even our own members are looking for work," she says.
And that's why Nash-Holmes says it's important to help women land on their feet. Some are just grateful for the learning experience. "Oh, this is great, this is a wonderful resource," Carroll says.
This is the third year the organization held the event.
