Obesity is an epidemic in this country. BMI, or body mass index, is the current gold standard for realizing healthy weight. And still, obesity is only getting worse.
George Fernandez found himself wanting to lose weight. And not being successful. So he turned to himself. He's a professor of applied statistics at the University of Nevada. And he's created a new way of looking at weight. "Rather than telling you this is your ideal weight or perfect weight which is normally a range, a very narrow range, how about giving you the top limit so that you don't go above that limit."
In other words, telling people what their maximum weight should be. Using his skills as a statistician, and the BMI numbers, he figured out what every person's maximum weight based on their height. For women, the baseline is 5'0", 125 pounds. For every inch over 5 feet you stand, you just add 4.5 pounds to the baseline 125.
Take the example of a woman 5'8". That's 8 inches over 5 feet so times 8 by 4.5. That equals 36. 125 + 36 = 161 pounds. A female who's 5'8" should never weigh more than 161 pounds.
For men, the baseline is 5'9" and 175 pounds. Guys add 5 pounds for every inch over 5'9". Even if this math confuses you, all you have to do is look once at Fernandez' chart and you've got your number for life. "Once you reach 20 years old, once you become 20 years old, once you become an adult you know your maximum weight."
Fernandez believes this chart, that he came up with after looking at speed limit signs, could revolutionize the obesity epidemic in this country. And he says his maximum weight theory is less influenced by race or lifestyle.
