Douglas County School District officials say they will install new continuous monitors at four area schools where elevated levels of radon have been detected, including Whittell High School at Lake Tahoe.
Three of the schools are in Carson Valley -- Carson Valley Middle School, Gardnerville Elementary and Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.
The EPA's guideline for radon is 4.0 picocuries per liter.
In Carson Valley, levels marginally exceed the guideline, ranging from 4.1 picocuries per liter at Carson Valley Middle School to 5 picocuries per liter at Pau-Wa-Lu.
However, among 56 locations tested at Whittell High School, seven yielded elevated levels, ranging from 4.2 picocuries per liter to 13 picocuries per liter.
District Chief Financial Officer Holly Luna told school board members earlier this week that continuous radon monitors will be installed in the schools to further assess the levels.
