A McQueen High School math teacher is being recognized statewide for her work in the classroom.
Sue Knafelc is the recipient of the 2009 Siemens State Teacher Award. She was judged by the percentage of her students who passed their AP Calculus class. "When I first heard I was thrilled, the organization has asked me to apply for the award for a few years but I never did."
Knafelc decided to go for it this year and won $1,000. She said the cash is great but the real rewards sit in her classroom everyday. "I love my students. They are fun and excited. I'm just a stepping stone to where they are going. It's wonderful to watch them grow."
Knafelc has taught at McQueen for 17 years. She said her secret is being patient with her students and giving them lots of homework!
