Sun Valley Standoff Ends After 36 Hours

Posted: Updated:

A 36 hour standoff ends in Sun Valley after Washoe County deputies find the man's body inside the home. Authorities say they were trying to serve an arrest warrant on Dale Mattson when he pulled a handgun on them.

Deputies were able to take it from him, but Mattson grabbed a shotgun and fired at officers.

No one was hurt in the 6am Sunday incident and the officers retreated.

Authorities say the 45-year-old refused to communicate with officers throughout the ordeal.

Authorities used a robot to enter the home and retrieve weapons, then fired tear gas into the home, but Mattson never emerged.

At one point Monday morning, police played a recording of a female friend pleading for Mattson to surrender.

Authorities say they found Mattson dead inside the home around 4:30pm. They don't know if he killed himself or was shot by officers at this point.

Authorities say the warrant was issued after he allegedly made a bomb threat on September 16th to a woman living on the next block on the same street.

The Regional Officer Involved Shooting team is investigating the death.

In accordance with Washoe County Sheriff's Office policy, if it is determined any deputy was involved in this shooting, they will be placed on routine administrative leave.
