Nevada is a world leader in developing geothermal power. Not only can our expertise pay off when it comes to powering this state, but our technology could help power the world. Case in point - Germany.
Nevada now has ten operating geothermal power plants and is considered a world leader in developing the technology. Not only do we have a lot of geothermal power to tap, we have a lot of knowledge to share, with say Germany.
Germany, which has many of the same goals, is a geothermal producer and is looking to further its efforts perhaps through joint ventures.
Workshops at the Desert Research Institute this week are familiarizing Germans with where we are with renewable energy and are also explaining to us where they are and what they're looking for. "There are a lot of options and opportunities for both sides and I'm optimistic there are opportunities for both parties," says Christoph Schmitt from Saxon State Ministry.
Alan Distefano from the Nevada Commission on Economic Development says, "They approached us and said they wanted to come here so they know Nevada's a leader so I definitely feel it could lead to investment in Nevada and other cooperation with the Germans."
International joint ventures aren't new to Nevada. In fact according to Distefano such partnerships have pumped $7 billion into the state's economy over the years. And this week's meeting of the minds is hoped to add to that and to our knowledge on new ways to fuel our own economy for the future.
Tuesday afternoon the delegates met with Nevada companies specific to their developing projects. Wednesday, they'll tour Nevada geothermal plants to see the technology in action.
