Consumers Turn to Hybrids in Poor Economy

The high gas prices are contributing to many trading in their SUV's for more economical cars.  At the Lithia Chrysler Jeep Dealership Tom Clark says, "We're getting a lot more SUV trade-ins 7 or 8 out of town."

Dealership officials say an SUV may get you about 19 miles per gallon where as a sedan may rack up 28 miles a gallon.  Clarks states, "We're seeing a lot more people asking about gas mileage, particular 4WD vehicles that get better gas mileage."

A new system being installed in newer car models are multi displacement systems.  They allow gas guzzling cars to turn off the four cylinder engine at highway speeds, automatically saving fuel.

Over at Bill Pearce Courtesy Honda Bud DiFatta says, "People are still buying cars but they've changed their focus. The cars that are getting 12-14 miles a gallon aren't as attractive and its having an impact on the sales as well as trade-in values.  This month alone 40% of all car inquires have been for the hybrid."

And these new hybrids are selling like crazy.  Honda officials say they have a waiting list of over 30 consumers just this month.
