LOS ANGELES (AP) - From now on, there's no free ride on the Los Angeles subway. The Daily News of Los Angeles says an honor system that allowed fare-fudging riders through downtown turnstiles is over. As of this morning, turnstiles are locked at Union Station entrances to the Metro Red and Purple lines. Riders must have a TAP card pre-loaded with at least the $1.50 basic fare to gain access.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A homeless woman has been convicted of second-degree murder in the death of an 84-year-old woman who was pushed off a Los Angeles train platform. Jackkqueline Pogue was found guilty late yesterday shortly after her case went to jurors. Pogue's lawyer said during the trial that she was an unmedicated schizophrenic who had been released from a hospital three days earlier.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - An Orange County employee of mortgage giant Fannie Mae has pleaded not guilty to charges that he demanded kickbacks to provide listings of repossessed homes to a real estate broker. The Orange County Register says Armando Granillo worked in Fannie Mae's foreclosure sales office in Irvine. Prosecutors say Granillo was recorded demanding kickbacks from an Arizona real estate broker. Last month, a Fannie Mae worker filed a lawsuit claiming she was fired for complaining that her Irvine co-workers demanded kickbacks.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - Southern California authorities say it's a bizarre trend - drug users are trading Tide detergent for crack. The Press-Enterprise says it's a nationwide problem - people are stealing the popular but expensive detergent to swap for dope. San Bernardino police say detectives found lots of Tide during raids on drug houses. Turns out it wasn't being used to make drugs but to buy them. Retailers say gangs steal Tide and other household goods by the cartload.
