SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The state's largest health insurers, including Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield and Kaiser Permanente, will be among 13 plans competing for policies on California's new health care exchange. Officials with Covered California, the state agency running the health insurance marketplace, today announced the plans and prices that will be offered by private insurers when the exchange begins enrolling customers in October. Coverage begins Jan. 1, the same time virtually everyone in the country will be required to have health insurance or pay a penalty.

GLENDORA, Calif. (AP) - Cold-case investigators have returned to a Southern California backyard where they are searching clues in the disappearance of a woman 35 years ago. LA County deputies say ground-penetrating sonar detected something in the yard of the Glendora home where Wendy Byron lived before she vanished in 1978 at age 24. The investigation resumed today with 14 people ready to dig. Byron's former husband, Rob Byron, now lives elsewhere. He tells KNBC-TV he doesn't know why the home is being searched.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say an Orange County Sheriff's reserve sergeant found shot in the head and beaten was attacked by his 17-year-old son. The teen was arrested yesterday, several hours after the victim's wife found her husband severely wounded in their Rancho Santa Margarita home. City News Service reports the 50-year-old man is in critical condition today. Investigators say they suspect he was shot and attacked with a blunt force instrument.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) - California authorities have arrested a 31-year-old Kansas resident who's accused of helping coordinate gang activities in Los Angeles. An LA County sheriff's deputy was in Salina, Kan., yesterday to arrest the woman cellphones and computers from her Salina home to help coordinate criminal activity of the Surenos street gang in Los Angeles and Mexican Mafia members in the LA County jail.
