Howard Skolnik, director of the Nevada Department of Corrections, announced his retirement by the end of the month.
The 66-year-old Skolnik has been with the agency for more than 23 years, and has served as director since 2007.
Over the past few years as state agencies have had to cut budgets, Skolnik has said he'd rather than adopt a staffing arrangement that might endanger any of the prison system staffers.
In announcing his retirement, he tells The Associated Press that he feels like he "just got the weight of the world off my back."
