The University of Nevada Seismology Lab wants to make sure all Nevadans are prepared if a large earthquake strikes.

"You don't have time to think 'ok what do I do' if you haven't practiced drop, cover, hold on ok, then you start to wonder when you wake up 'what do I do?' and that can cost you your life or major injuries," says UNR Seismology Lab Director Graham Kent.

The "Great Nevada ShakeOut" is a statewide earthquake drill to be held on October 21st.

It's the first to be held in Nevada.

In the past Nevada held earthquake awareness week in February where school children would learn what to do in an earthquake.

But participants in the ShakeOut are signing up online so officials know how many people are prepared in case a large earthquake happens. "The time it takes to fill out the form for the great shakeout is about the time of shaking during a large earthquake."

More than a 1,000 people have signed up so far.
