Students arrested for occupying campus building

Associated Press - December 10, 2009 4:35 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Police have arrested a group of San Francisco State University students who barricaded themselves inside a campus building to protest budget cuts and fee hikes.

University spokeswoman Ellen Griffin says campus and city police entered the business administration building and ended the occupation at 3:15 a.m. Thursday.

Police arrested 12 people who locked themselves inside the building and cited them for misdemeanor trespassing. They also arrested 11 people who protested outside the building for resisting arrest and unlawful assembly. Two others were arrested for attempting to block traffic on 19th Avenue.

The protesters had entered the building before dawn on Wednesday, blocked the doors with furniture and forced the cancellation of classes. The building reopened to students and faculty Thursday.
