SAN DIEGO (AP) - A small earthquake has occurred under the ocean off Southern California.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 3.5 temblor was recorded at 1:38 p.m. Friday and was centered 43 miles west of San Diego.

The epicenter was midway between the mainland and Navy-owned San Clemente Island. A tiny aftershock followed.

A number of small undersea quakes have occurred in the area this year, including a 4.2 in January, a 3.8 in October and a 3.9 in November.
