H1N1 Concerns Many People This Holiday Season

Posted:

Thanks to the H1N1 flu epidemic, people say they're a little more anxious now in public.

"Just being really careful about touching things when I'm out."

"'Cause everybody's going to touch an elevator button and touch the handgrips on the escalator."

Doctors say the H1N1 virus can survive two hours on some surfaces. "I wash my hands a lot, especially in the airports, and stuff like this, come out of the airplane and wash your hands."

Federal health officials say the epidemic appears to be in a lull in right now. The number of cases dropped off significantly compared to a week ago possibly a pause between waves.

State health officials today warned people not to travel if they're sick. Most people told us the flu hasn't changed their plans. "No, we travel, and you know, travel abroad for Christmas and I travel for work, so no not really."

"I would say, the only thing that changed for us, for me at least, is I want to get the shot before we travel."

Hot dog vendor Rob Butter says his business seems unaffected by any flu worries. But to be careful, he wipes surfaces after each customer. "We sanitize everything very thoroughly and very often."

"It's all about having your own personal hygiene. As long as you have your own personal hygiene going, I think you'll be okay."

Bell ringer Kathy Jordan may have been overly careful. "I have a friend who wanted to come for Thanksgiving dinner, but he has H1N1 in his mobile home park, so I had to tell him to stay home."
