When most think of Thanksgiving, specific foods come to mind and it's not always turkey and gravy. How about macaroni and cheese, greens potato salad and apple pie?

Before you eat it, you might want to think about how you're gonna work it all back off.

Katherine Tallmadge is a dietician and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. She says there's no doubt about it, during the holidays a lot of people pack on a lot of pounds, which is why she says a lot of her clients get nervous this time of year.  "The mashed potatoes with butter and gravy, the stuffing made with butter, the desserts. Thanksgiving can add up to thousands of calories."

But Tallmadge says there are ways to enjoy yourself without overdoing it. Like go ahead and indulge on the holiday, but avoid leftovers. "If you immediately go back to healthy eating, those calories you ate on Thanksgiving really can just average out."

Incorporate some exercise into your day. Snack on raw vegetables while your cooking instead of other fattening hors d'oeuvres. And try using a few lower calorie ingredients. "Mashed potatoes can be made with fat free sour cream or yogurt instead of butter."

Weight Watchers also adds these tips: drink a big glass of water before you eat, limit your alcohol and try to focus on the people rather than the food.

Tallmadge says it you have a full schedule of parties to go to, pick the one you want to splurge at and try to east sensibly at the others.
