OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Some truck drivers who haul goods into and out of the Port of Oakland may soon find it too expensive to work in the port.
With new air quality regulations due to take effect Jan. 1, truckers were told during a meeting Monday that there would be no extension to the new rules, or additional funding to help them upgrade their trucks.
An estimated 1,000 independent drivers will be unable to legally enter the port because they can't afford to replace their older trucks with new ones, or spend up to $21,000 for a new diesel filter.
Air quality officials say the new rules were put in place after studies showed that people living near the port had higher rates of cancer and asthma.
