The Regional Transportation Commission has voted to update studies and seek federal funding for a street car and light rail project. Now, the Reno City Council has to decide whether to seek voter approval next November to ask the state Legislature to raise the state property tax cap to fund the city's share of the project. Plans call for first building a street car line on Virginia Street from California Avenue in downtown Reno to the University of Reno campus, a $67 million project. The next phase would build tracks from downtown to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center at an estimated cost of $84 million. While street cars are initially planned, light rail trains would eventually be purchased and would run on the same tracks in a final phase. ------ Information from: Reno Gazette-Journal, http://www.rgj.com (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
