LAS VEGAS (AP) - Officials unveiled a historic marker Friday identifying Whitney Township as the oldest unincorporated township in Clark County.
The ceremony at the Whitney Community Center commemorated Stowell Whitney's family dairy ranch, founded before the 1920s.
Whitney subdivided after the state built a road to Boulder City in 1932, and later sold to Basic Magnesium Inc. The Whitney family moved to Logandale.
Basic Magnesium played a key military role in the production of lightweight metals and rocket fuels during World War II.
Today, most of historic Whitney Ranch is in the city of Henderson.
The marker is among several being placed as part of the Clark County centennial. The county was formed July 1, 1909, from the southern half of Lincoln County.
