Authorities are figuring out why a 13-year-old girl from Shaw Middle School died Tuesday morning.

The Washoe County School District says the unidentified girl collapsed outside of class before school.

Staff members gave the eighth grader CPR. She was then flown by Careflight to Renown Regional Medical Center where she later died. Her mother and father were with the girl at the hospital.

Right now there is no cause of death and no word on if underlying medical conditions were involved.

The Spanish Springs school has brought in extra counselors to help kids get through the tragedy. About 50 children were picked by parents after today’s incident.

Both the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and school police are investigating. The Washoe County Coroner’s Office will also conduct an autopsy.

Shaw principal David Fullenwider called the young girl’s passing “a shocking and tragic loss for her family and for all of us  here at Shaw Middle School.”

School Superintendent Heath Morrison and Board president Barbara Clark issued the following message: "We express our greatest sympathy and concern to her family and friends on this heart-breaking occasion. They and she will be in the thoughts of all of us in the Washoe County School District."
