Reno police shoot suicidal man who pointed weapon

Associated Press - October 29, 2009 1:25 PM ET

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Reno police say officers shot and wounded a man after he raised a weapon with a laser sight at them.

The Washoe County sheriff's office and Sparks Police Department are investigating the shooting that happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Rancho Motel on East Fourth Street.

Officers were called to the motel on a report of a suicidal person.

Reno police say as two uniformed officers approached the room, the man appeared in the doorway and refused orders to put the gun down.

Investigators say both officers fired at the man when they saw a red laser sight moving their way. The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Names of those involved were not immediately released.
