ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Federal regulators have faulted Newmont Mining Corp. for a fatal Elko County mine accident in June.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration cited Newmont for failure to establish rules for pedestrian safety in a drilling area.
57-year-old Steve Halverson of Spring Creek died June 10 at the North Lantern Pit north of Carlin after he was struck by a truck that was backing up.
Mine Safety and Health Administration officials say they terminated Newmont's citations after the company developed new operating procedures and installed a new backup alarm on the truck.
Newmont spokeswoman Mary Korpi says the company takes Halverson's death personally and is committed to learning lessons from it.
Halverson, a drill operator, had been a Newmont employee since 1987.
