MEDIA RELEASE

The Nevada Department of Public Safety has received numerous media calls on the department's role in regard to the parole status of Phillip Garrido. Garrido is currently in custody at the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez, California for the alleged kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard on June 10, 1991. The following information is being provided from the records of the Division of Parole and Probation as they relate to Phillip Garrido.

Phillip Garrido was arrested in Reno on November 23, 1976 on charges of kidnapping and rape of a South Lake Tahoe woman and for transporting his victim over the state line to Reno, Nevada, where he held her captive in a storage unit. Garrido was convicted on March 9, 1977 and began serving his 50 year sentence on June 30, 1977, in Levenworth, Kansas on the federal kidnapping charges.

Garrido was released from Levenworth to Nevada State Prison on January 22,1988 where he served seven months of his concurrent sentence on Nevada charges.  Garrido was transferred to federal parole authorities in Antioch, California on August 26, 1988. Garrido was released from federal parole 1999.

California State Parole took over his case in 1999 and has had him on Interstate Compact since then. Interstate Compact is when another state agrees to take responsibility and authority for supervising an offender because they reside in their state.

Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy Garrido, whom he had met at Levenworth while serving time, are in custody for allegedly kidnapping 11 year old Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991.  According to Eldorado Sherriff's Department, Jaycee Lee Dugard has allegedly been with the Garridos' ever since holding her captive in a secret backyard at his home in Antioch.

Yesterday, Nevada DPS, Division of Parole and Probation sent a detainer to California, asking for a hold on Garrido for violation of his parole in Nevada.
